Assessments

Neuropsychological Evaluation

A neuropsychological assessment provides a comprehensive overview of a person’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. It typically assesses domains such as attention, processing speed, memory, language, visual-spatial skills, and executive functions.

The results are interpreted by considering a range of factors that may be affecting your thinking and daily functioning, including neurological, medical, psychiatric, cultural, and psychosocial influences. This helps clarify what may be contributing to any changes and guides personalized recommendations for care and support, including a roadmap for cognitive rehabilitation.

The amount of direct time needed for an evaluation can vary widely, typically ranging from 2–10 hours, depending on the purpose of the assessment.

Areas of Specialty:

  • Neurodegenerative conditions/dementia (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementias, etc.)
  • Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA)/strokes
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

How can a neuropsychological evaluation help?

  • Diagnostic clarification – Helps identify the factors contributing to cognitive, emotional, behavioral, academic, or functional difficulties and supports accurate diagnosis when appropriate.
  • Comprehensive understanding of strengths and challenges – Provides a detailed profile of cognitive functioning, highlighting both areas of difficulty and areas of relative strength.
  • Treatment and intervention planning – Guides individualized recommendations for therapy, rehabilitation, educational supports, workplace accommodations, and other interventions.
  • Self-understanding and education – Increases insight into how a person learns, thinks, and functions, helping individuals, families, and providers better understand their needs.
  • Tracking change over time – Establishes a baseline and helps monitor recovery, progression, stability, or response to treatment and interventions.
  • Support for important decisions and services – Provides objective information that can inform educational, vocational, medical, and independent living decisions, as well as access to appropriate supports and accommodations.

Therapy and Cognitive Rehabilitation

Therapy at Excel Neuropsychology is grounded in evidenced-based practice, meaning these are therapies that have been put to the test in rigorous clinical trials and have shown the strongest support in addressing mental health concerns. We utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a practical, evidence based approach that helps people understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. CBT offers concrete tools for managing stress, improving coping skills, and creating meaningful change in daily life.

At the same time, therapy is never one size fits all. That is why we use an integrated approach, drawing from mindfulness, behavioral strategies, and insight oriented work to meet each person where they are. This allows therapy to be flexible, collaborative, and responsive to each individual’s emotional and cognitive needs—especially for those navigating cognitive changes or complex medical conditions.

Additional Assessment Services

Psychological Evaluation

Psychological evaluations are offered when appropriate and may be particularly helpful for understanding emotional, behavioral, personality, or attentional factors that affect daily functioning. These evaluations can help clarify diagnoses, inform treatment recommendations, and identify conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or personality-related concerns.

While some cognitive testing may be included, psychological evaluations are more focused on emotional and behavioral functioning than comprehensive neuropsychological assessment.
